A volcanic eruption of gigantic proportions (1000 times greater than Mount St. Helen's 1980 eruption) occurred around Chiricahua National Monument 27 million years ago. Two thousand feet of highly silicious ash and pumice came down from the Turkey Creek Caldera, forming a mixture called rhyolitic tuff. This substance eventually eroded into what are now spires and unusual rock formations. Cruise the 8-mile scenic drive to Massai Point, tour Faraway Ranch, hike the Echo Canyon Loop trail (3.5 miles).
