The building is one of few spared by General William Tecumseh Sherman during his raid of the city in the Battle of Meridian. It has served many functions throughout its history, including as residence, a shelter for Union officers, a Confederate General's headquarters, etc. The building is on the National Register Historic Places and is considered a Mississippi Landmark. Meridian Community College. Highland Park Dentzel Carousel and Shelter Building. It has been in operation since 1909 and is a National Historial Landmark. It is the only remaining two-row stationary Dentzel menagerie in the world.
