'The Devil's Tower, an important landmark. Before indian tribes, long ago before the white man reached Wyoming, was called Mateo Tepee or Grizzly Bear Lodge. A number of indian legends describe the origin of Devil's Tower. One legend tells of several little girls chased onto a low rock to escape from attacking bears. Prayers forheld were heeded. The rock carried them upwards to safety as the claws of the leaping bears left furrowed columns in the edges of the descending tower.'
