The name Flambeau means 'flaming torch.' This name came into being in the 1600's after early French explorers came upon Indians fishing the river at night with the aid of firebrands held aloft on sticks.
The wild and beautiful Middle Flambeau begins near Nine Mile Creek. For about 50 miles, the river flows entirely within the Flambeau State Forest.
