Welcome to Monongahela National Forest, WV. - Eastern boundary. - The Monongahela is located in the Appalachian Mountains of east central West Virginia at elevations of 1,000 to 4,861 feet. The forest stands of various tree species and age classes, and non-forest areas--such as wetlands, cliffs, grassy meadows, and cascading streams. With over 900,000 acres in federal ownership the Monongahela offers a variety of freshwater fishing experiences. Our Forest contains 600 miles of cold water streams, representing 50 percent of all trout water and 90 percent of native brook trout water in West Virginia. Forest streams provide habitat for stocked fingerling and catchable trout. Rainbow, golden rainbow, brown and brook trout are the four species stocked regularly.
