Access to Whitman Mission National Historic Site, WA. - photo NPS South side of highway. This site commemorates the courage of Marcus and Narcissa Whitman, the role the Whitmans played in establishing the Oregon Trail, and the challenges encountered when two different cultures meet.
In 1836, before the wagon trains, a small intrepid group of Presbyterian missionaries traveled with the annual fur trapper’s caravan into “Oregon Country.” Missionaries Narcissa Whitman and Eliza Spalding became the first white women to travel across the continent.

Historic Elliot House There are a number of historic homes within walking distance of Main Street in downtown Cathlamet. The home in the photo is located at 99 Main Street. The sculpture in the front of the home is of 'Totem' - one of the early ferries on the river - built by the local high school metal working class.

View from highway Point of interest. The photo shows a rock formation. Geologists say 15 million years ago, molten stone poured from cracks in the earth near the eastern border of today's Washington and Oregon. Layers of flowing lava spread west, coating 65,000 square miles with andesite and basalt up to 2 miles thick and pushing the ancient Columbia River north. Then the Cascades rose and erupted.
