South to community of The Dalles Oregon, south to The Dalles Dam, South to Horse Thief Lake Washington State Park. Horsethief Lake State Park is a 338-acre camping park with 7,500 feet of freshwater shoreline on the Columbia River. Horsethief Butte dominates the skyline. It stands over the lake like an ancient castle. The lake itself is about 90 acres in size and is actually an impoundment of the Columbia River. The lake was flooded into existance by the reservoir created by The Dalles Dam. The park adjoins the 3,000-plus acres of The Dalles Mountain Ranch State Park. The park has eight tent spaces, eight utility spaces, one dump station and one restroom. Maximum site length is 60 feet (may have limited availability). In addition, there are two primative hiker/bicycle camp sites. Be aware that it can be very windy in the Columbia River Gorge, and be prepared for such conditions. All campsites are first-come, first-served.

Point of interest. The photo shows a rock formation. Geologists say 15 million years ago, molten stone poured from cracks in the earth near the eastern border of today's Washington and Oregon. Layers of flowing lava spread west, coating 65,000 square miles with andesite and basalt up to 2 miles thick and pushing the ancient Columbia River north. Then the Cascades rose and erupted.
