Recreation in the out-of-doors is equally varied in the summer season. State parks and privately operated campgrounds provide everything from wilderness tent sites to complete hook-ups for RVs. Streams, ponds and lakes invite bass and trout fishing, canoeing, kayaking, sailing and boating. Winding blacktop roads are ideal for touring by car, motorcycle, or bicycle. Mountain resorts offer chair-lift assist to hiking and mountain bike trails, or extensive facilities for tennis, golf and swimming.

The park is located on a 90-acre peninsula with 22 picnic sites, tables, hibachis, swimming beach, nature trail, trailer boat ramp, boat rentals, concession area and restrooms. Waterbury Reservoir, VT. 830 acres, is very popular for boating and fishing activities as is the Little river, which flows from the Reservoir to the Winooski River Facilities: Little River State Park, which is part of Mt. Mansfield, VT. State Forest, primarily consists of a campground with 81 tent/trailer sites and 20 leantos. This is central Vermont's largest and most popular campground. Three of the four restrooms include hot showers ($). A sanitary dump station is available, but no hookups. In 1777, when Vermont became an independent state and decided that all territory not granted by New Hampshire should be 'vacant' land, Plainfield, VT. was one such piece of land between Montpelier, VT. and Marshfield, VT. This gore, (one of the bits and pieces of land left over after a regular township had been surveyed), was granted to James Whitelaw, James Savage and William Coit in 1788 and called St. Andrew's Gore.

There are three double pit toilets and a hand pump well. There is a cartop boat launch, swimming area, and access to miles of hiking trails. Boulder Beach State Park. The day use area has 75 shaded picnic sites with tables and hibachis. All rest rooms have lavatories and flush toilets. There is 200 feet of beach and swimming area. Stillwater State Park. Facilities: The campground has 62 tent/trailer sites and 17 lean-tos. All rest rooms include hot showers ($). A sanitary dump station is available, but no hookups.

The large historic granite bathhouse has rest rooms, changing areas, and a concession stand. There are approximately 40 free standing charcoal grills, nearly 80 picnic tables, play areas, rental boats and canoes, and lots of parking space.

He built the first frame dwelling in 1787, on a spot at the north end of Main Street now known as Arnold Park. Allen spent a considerable portion of his life in the effort to achieve independence for what is now Vermont, commanding (1770-1775) an irregular force called the Green Mountain Boys, so named in defiance of the New York threat to drive Vermont settlers off the fields and 'into the Green Mountains.

Maidstone is the most remote of Vermont's state parks and still retains much of the wilderness character associated with the Northeast Kingdom. Maidstone Lake was created when glacial ice carved out a deep basin in a preexisting valley. The lake offers good lake trout and salmon fishing and has had some outstanding record catches. The campground has 45 tent/trailer sites and 37 lean-tos. Three of the four rest rooms include hot showers ($). A sanitary dump station is available, but no hookups.
