At the Junction of United States Highway #85 with United States Highway #14 and Interstate Highway #90, near North Spearfish, South Dakota, a Community in Lawrence County, South Dakota, and Spearfish, South Dakota, a city located in Lawrence County, South Dakota, begins the Spearfish Canyon Scenic Byway it's journey. The Spearfish Canyon Scenic Byway, located in the northern Black Hills, is close to the visitor and always upward throughout the journey on the byway. A forest of spruce, pine, aspen, birch, and oak covers much of the hillsides. Above these slopes, the skyline is topped with an extensive ridge of vertical walled limestone cliffs.
