General Grant National Memorial

Description:
This memorial to Ulysses S. Grant, the Union commander who brought the Civil war to an end, includes the tombs of General and Mrs. Grant. A West Point graduate Grant served in the Mexican War and the American Civil war. In 1866 Congress awarded Grant his fourth star making him the first full General of the Armies in American history. As the President of the United States (1869-77), Grant signed the act establishing the first national park, Yellowstone, March 1, 1872. After serving two terms as President, Grant entered business on Wall Street in New York City. He died of throat cancer on July 23, 1885 and was laid to rest in New York City on August 8th. Designed by architect John Duncan, the granite and marble tomb was completed in 1897 and is the largest mausoleum in North America.

Passenger Cars only: Henry Hudson Parkway to 95th Street exit; North on Riverside Drive to 122nd St. Limited amount of street parking is available. Buses, campers, and all other vehicles: From the North; I-87 (Major Deegan Expressway) to exit 4 - East 149th St; west on 149th Street across bridge onto West 145th St; west on 145th St. to Broadway; south on Broadway to 120th St; west on 120th St. to Riverside Dr. From the South: North on Tenth Ave and Broadway to 120th Street; west on 120th St to Riverside Dr.

Public Transportation
By train: service is available 7 days a week. 7th Ave-Broadway #1 or#9 subway trains stop at West 116th St Station By Bus: On Riverside Drive up to 120th St. on route M-5.
