Byway: New Mexico - El Camino Real - New Mexico
Byway Description: El Camino Real crosses a land rich in history and culture. From the low-lying flatlands of the south to the soaring peaks of the northern mountains, the terrain climbs 10,000 feet in altitude, creating a landscape of dramatic contrasts. The Royal Highway to the Interior Land follows the Rio Grande from the United States/Mexico border to Santa Fe. You will enjoy a wealth of sites, including several former Spanish colonial and Mexican villages, two U.S. Territorial forts, and five Pueblo Indian villages.
