South of highway. Montana's most intact ghost town was never built to last. Garnet endures along with the spirits of the rugged gold miners and their families who carved a community in the heart of the Garnet Mountain Range at the end of the nineteenth century. In 1898, some 1,000 people knew Garnet as home. |

North to the communities of Woodworth, Seeley Lake. North to Salmon State Park Campground. A natural impoundment, Salmon Lake is one of the beautiful links in the chain of lakes on the Clearwater River and just south of Seeley Lake. Fishing, boating, and a variety of water sports are popular activities in this woodland setting of western larch, ponderosa pine, and Douglas-fir. This park is situated on 42 acres of land at 4,000 feet in elevation. It provides 20 sites with flush and vault toilets, grills, fire rings, firewood, picnic tables, trash cans, drinking water and interpretive displays. RV/trailer units are limited in size of 25 feet |

Services at highway, fuel. Access to Placid Lake State Park. Located on a branch of the Clearwater River, Placid Lake is known for its good trout fishing and smooth water. A number of facilities are provided for camping, picnicking, boating and swimming. Interpretive panels give an account of the early-day logging practices attested to by the massive western larch stumps in the area. The park is 32 acres in size and is 4,100 feet in elevation. There are 40 sites that offer flush toilets, a group use area, grills/firerings, firewood, picnic tables, trash cans, and drinking water. RV/trailer are limited in size to 25'. |

Paved turnout, north side of highway. Fort Shaw, barring fur trading posts, the most important white settlements were the mining camps in the western mountains. To protect the miners and settlers from possible incursions of hostile tribes a series of military posts was established around the eastern border of the mining camps and settlements. Fort Shaw was established in 1867 was one of these.
General Gibbon led his troops from here in 1876 to join General Terry and General Custer on the Yellowstone just prior to the disastrous fight with the Sioux and Cheyenne Indians at the battle of Little Big Horn. |
