Father Jacques Marquette, a French Jesuit missionary, established Michigan's earliest European settlements at Sault Ste. Marie and St. Ignace in 1668 and 1671.

Exit 338. Access to Mill Creek Historic State Park - East side of the highway. Access to Michigan State Visitor Information Center. Historic Mill Creek, the Straits of Mackinac's first industrial complex, Mill Creek provided sawn lumber for the settlement of Mackinac Island in the 1790s.
