City of Salisbury. Salisbury's location at the head of Wicomico River was a major factor in its becoming one of Maryland's outstanding cities. The new official port of Salisbury in 1732 gradually became a gateway to an ever-spreading area of colonists seeking more land for homesteading. It was the so-called landing that has grown to be second only to Baltimore as the most active seaport in Maryland.
