Some of the most beautiful stained glass windows in the world are encompassed in the churchs of Searsport - as the seacaptains gained wealth - they also competed with each other as to who could dedicate the most beautiful stained glass window!(it the old keeping up with the Jones's - but it started way back when) The town is an active deep water seaport - and a fishing town. This is the beautiful, magnificent Penobscot Bay area!

Yes - there are frequently moose in the park - along with wild turkeys - and at the water's edge - you might see Rocky the harbor seal - lounging in the sun. Our lobstermen might be bringing in their catch for the day. Walk the beach to find tiny sand dollars Also a great place in the summer for a takeout lunch at the picnic tables.

The museum consists of 12 buildings - 9 of which are on the National Historic Register. 34.9 (243.3)	21.7 (151.2)	Sears Island road - and the Searsport Historic Society	Make your turn here - for the new home of the Searsport Historic Society is here ( you need to visit this - Searsport is unique in the entire world when it comes tomaritime history)and also Sears Island, owned by the State of Maine, is the largest uninhabited island in Maine. Leave your car at the causeway and take a good hike to the water - where you'll find sea glass, sand dollars and all types of wondrous items from the ocean. This is Penobscot Bay at its best.

If the church doors are open this is a pleasant stop.. Sit and meditate - watch the way the sun plays on the stained glass.
37.5 (240.7)	23.3 (149.6)	Stockton Springs, Maine Line	This is the turnoff to Stockton Spring and Ft. Point State Park - Cape Jellison and the Ft. Point Light House. Follow the signs to Ft. Point State Park. If the park is closed, continue on and take your first left - on Lighthouse Road - it will take you directly to the lighthouse. The park is beautiful and secluded. Pick some wildblueberries -(remember they grow close to the ground) and look for the bayberry bushes
39.9 (238.3)	24.8 (148.1)	Rte. 1 A to Bangor	If you are headed to Bangor - then this is where you'll turn away from the coast and head inland. It is about 45minutes to the Bangor center - or to the Bangor International Airport. Bangor hosts the National Folk Festival from August 23 - 25th

44.6 (233.6)	27.7 (145.2)	Scenic & historic turnoff - Penobscot River, Maine	Make certain you pull into this turnoff - the view of Bucksport, Maine under the suspension bridge (a precursor to the George Washington and the Golden Gate bridges) is one of the most photographic in the State. Read the markers and imagine the huge ships in the Penobscot River - literally firing upon each other.

You can spend a day at this wondrous place - where the cannons still point out to the river - but a shot was never fired. 50.7 (227.5)	31.5 (141.4)	Bucksport, Maine	The town of Bucksport, Maine - an industrial town - is on the Penobscot River. You'll have crossed 2 bridges over the river to get to this junction. Bucksport is a nice town with good restaurants and shopping - AND a silent movie museum.

Everything in Castine is written in stone - it shall not change. Upon entering the town - one looks straight down the cathedral of Elm trees directly to the magnificent and safe harbor. Even the public restrooms are absolutely pristine. A destination place - but one you should not miss!.

A destination place - and... you can continue down the Bagaducce Peninsula all the way to Stonington, the most environmentally friendly place for raising the best lobsters in the U.S. If you go - make certain you stop at Caterpillar Hill - take your camera - it is a vista like none other in the world!

Rooster Brother - a store for cooks -is a mecca. Also - the John Edwards Market (all organic foods - a terrific art gallery and winery) Ellsworth shopping mall district - a few miles further on Rt. 1 - also houses an L.L. Bean outlet. You just may want to stop to see if they have any bargains - just for you!

Make certain you visit - Thunder Hole - and Sand Beach (the water never gets above 55 F). We go to Schoodic Point during storm watch - it is our natural relaxation place.

The sun hits Lubec - the most easterly town in the US- and Eastport, Maine - the most easterly city in the US - prior to any other part of the US Washington County is the size of the states of Delaware and Rhode Island combined.

However, if you want to go on to Cherryfield - which is the wildblueberry capital of the world- just stay on Rte. 1 for about 6 miles. Cherryfield is an absolutely beautiful small in-land town - with magnificent architecture - huge houses and on the Narraguagus River. One of the estates has a wonderful small railroad running thru the fields that abound with sheep. It is charming!

This is all part of the Quoddy Loop When you look towards Deer Island - you will see choppy water. This is the Old Sow - the largest whirlpool in the Western Hemisphere.

During the Revolution - the 2 towns refused to fire upon each other - and in fact - loaned each other ammunition!
