Blueberry Barrens
|
This is the start of miles upon miles of wild Blueberry Barrens. This is Washington County - the Sunrise County - and also the wild Bluleberry Capital of the world. The barrens are gorgeous - filled with huge granite boulders . The barren owners 'fire off' 25 % of the barrens each year, in the belief that the blueberry harvest the following year will be that much better.

Maine Rte. 9 is called the 'airline' - as it travels directly to Bangor. It is a desolate road - and windy altho' its been updated. It is highly travelled by trucks - and there is but 1 place on the entire route where you might be able to get gas or have auto help - or get a bite to eat. This is Wilderness area.
