Byway: Louisiana - Creole Nature Trail

Byway Description: Offering a close-up view of Louisiana's unique environment, the Creole Nature Trail travels through hundreds of thousands of acres of untouched wetlands. Drive through the beautiful scenery of Louisiana's gulf beaches, decorated with colorful wildflowers; look for birds, alligators, and all kinds of southwest Louisiana wildlife. The trail cuts through the marshlands of southern Calcasieu and Cameron parishes and hugs the coast of the Gulf of Mexico.

At the western boundary of the Sabine refuge is Sabine Lake, the inlet for Port Arthur, Texas, while the tip of the eastern end reaches Calcasieu Lake. Sabine is a 124,511 acre sanctuary, the largest coastal marsh refuge on the Gulf Coast of the United States, and is home to more than 200 species of birds; including ducks, common egret, geese, Olivaceous cormorant, raptors, snowy egret, wading birds, and shorebirds.
