Illinois - The National Road - Illinois
Description: The rolling countryside, prairie fields, and small towns along the old trail whisper to you of an earlier time. Nineteenth-century river transportation and historic cemeteries tell the struggle of early settlers. County fairs and main street stores speak of small town U.S.A. where soda fountains, museums, and antique shops are acquiescent to days gone by. Fields of fresh cut hay, grazing cattle, and old farm barns are intermingled with the many small towns. You will find lakes, streams, the premier prehistoric Native American Indian site, Cahokia Mounds, and wildlife refuges all beckoning you to stay awhile.
