Construction of the fort began in 1845, shortly after Florida became a state. In 1850, the fort was named after U.S. President Zachary Taylor.Fort Zachary Taylor Historic State Park offers daily tours of the historic fort at Noon and 2 p.m. Besides an opportunity to see and learn about American history, the park boasts the best beach in Key West.
