Don't miss the state of Guanajuato, as you zip long from Guadalajara to Mexico city on toll highway #15. Turn off on state highway #43 or #90, then take state highway #45, and in a little over and hour, you be in the the city of Guanajuato. While not as important as other modern Mexican cities, at end of the 18th century, it was second most important and richest region in New Spain, after Mexico City. The city, along with the state, flourished primarily due to silver mines, and to this day, it continues to be the country's leading silver producer, with well-preserved colonial cities and charming towns.
The city of Guanajuato, the state's enchanting capital, with its historical sites and magnificent architecture, was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1988. Some may know this city for its famous Holy Week processions with the Lady of Guanajuato commemoration.
While some drivers avoid interior Mexico for fear of overheating, remember that the high areas offer a mild climate. Driving may be slow, due to the winding road, however the reward is the states unusual beauty, rich colonial tradition, colorful houses perched on the hills.
The city of San Miguel de Allende, on state highway #51 and just east of Guanajuato, has attracted in recent years a large community of expatriates and retirees from the U.S. who now call this quaint town their second home. Retirees are often a source of great information, so if you are in the market, make sure to ask them what to see in the area.
