Photo taken at The Yukon, Top of The World Highway at the border crossing of Alaska. - European incursions into what later became the Yukon started in the first half of the nineteenth century. Hudson's Bay Company explorers and traders from Mackenzie River trading posts used two different routes to enter the Yukon and created trading posts along the way. The Klondike Gold Rush was the seminal event in the Yukon's history. Gold was discovered on a tributary of the Klondike River in August 1896. An estimated 30,000 to 40,000 people braved hardships to reach the Klondike gold fields in the winter and spring of 1897-1898.

Editors note: This was worth the trip, we watched the bear for 10 minutes, the bear was not bothered with us, we kept our diesel motor running all the time.

The hills around you are home to the Fortymile caribou herd. These migratory barren-ground caribou are smaller than the woodland caribou and they travel long distances between their winter and summer ranges. At one time as many as 500,000 caribou covered these hills from late summer to spring. The herd returned west in May to its calving grounds in Alaska. In the 1930s the Fortymile herd ranged across the Central and Southern Yukon. It wintered mainly in the Dawson Range (south Carmacks) and caribou were reported as far south as Lake Laberge, near Whitehorse, in the summer of 1936/37. If the Fortymile herd ever returned to this area in great numbers the Top of the World Highway will provide excellent viewing opportunities.

This is a excellent campground with a fair amount of pull-through campsites for big rigs. some campsites right along the Yukon River. Camping facilities: 98 campsites, 18 pull-through, free firewood, water, picnic tables, pit toilets, no electrical hookups. We camped here and walked to the ferry (free) and into Dawson City.

It survives as one of the many sternwheelers which plied the lakes and rivers of the Yukon. Prior to air or road service, the sternwheelers were the very lifeblood of the Yukon’s economic and social life. They brought everything from news and people to groceries and mining equipment from the outside to the territory. Tours available.
