North to Fort Battleford National Historic Site. Fort Battleford showcases the role of the North West Mounted Police in the Canadian West. The fort was established in 1876 and abandoned in 1924. It offers five original buildings, four with period furniture. The stockades and bastions are reconstructed, and the barracks has an interpretive display. When Battleford was declared a territorial capital in 1876, a police force was required. By 1885, Fort Battleford boasted the largest police force in the west. During the armed conflict of 1885, Fort Battleford was the base for military operations, and gave shelter to 500 people who feared for their safety.
