South to St. Joseph Island. Fort St. Joseph National Historic Site of Canada. Still remote and relatively undisturbed, Fort St. Joseph symbolizes the commercial and military alliance that existed between the British and the First Nations peoples of the western Great Lakes region in the aftermath of the American Revolutionary War through the War of 1812. In addition to the Fort itself, the site contains a remarkable assemblage of archaeological features which in their undeveloped state reveal part of the complex pattern of military, domestic and commercial life - Aboriginal and European - in this frontier outpost.

Community of Massey, services. North to Chutes Provincial Park, camping 130 campsites, 56 elec. sites, flush toilets, showers. The only provincial park between Sudbury and Sault Ste. Marie, Chutes is an excellent stopover for Trans-Canada travellers. Situated next to the shallow, swimmable Aux Sables River, the park gets its name from a chute that once diverted logs around the waterfall. Follow riverside nature trails to see rapids upstream.

North to Community of Balfore, City of Timmons. Halfway Provincial Park, 215 campsites 120 elec sites, flush toilets, showers. You might see heron rookeries, moose, nesting osprey and beaver ponds as you paddle and camp among the 20 lakes in this wilderness northwest of Sudbury. Abundant fish, game and berries fed Ojibway here before loggers came and built chutes like the one between Halfway and Bailey lakes.
