Photo #10150 - THIS WAS THE MOOSE!!! The Viking Trail Deer Lake to Rocky Harbour The Viking Trail begins at the town of Deer Lake located along the Trans Canada Highway (route 1). As you head north on the Viking Trail towards St. Anthony you will pass through Gros Morne National Park. Continuing north towards St. Anthony, you pass by Port Saunders. Here you can take a short 15 km detour towards Port au Choix National Historic Site. From Port Saunders continue on the Viking Trail to the junction with route 436, about 20 km before St. Anthony. Follow route 436 for 30 km to L'Anse aux Meadows National Historic Site. At the tip of the Great Northern Peninsula of the island of Newfoundland, the remains of an 11th-century Viking settlement are evidence of the first European presence in North America. The excavated remains of wood-framed peat-turf buildings are similar to those found in Norse Greenland and Iceland (Page process time: 0.0021 seconds) |
