Bluenose was a Canadian schooner from Nova Scotia, a celebrated racing ship and a symbol of the province. The name 'bluenose'. Bluenose was launched at Lunenburg, Nova Scotia on March 26, 1921, as both a working cod-fishing schooner and a racing ship. Bluenose II, was launched at Lunenburg, NS, on July 24, 1963, built to original plans by many of the same workers. |

West side of highway. Campground, Cheeseman Park, NL, has 101 campsites, each with its own picnic table, fireplace, garbage can and vehicle space. Water taps and pit toilets are conveniently located throughout the park. HIKING: Smokey Cape Walking/Fitness Trail begins in the day-use area and ends at the beach parking lot. Situated on the Cape Ray barrens, J.T. Cheeseman has an variety of natural features, ranging from bogs to rolling, forested hills.

Barachois Pond is the largest Provincial Park in Western Newfoundland. There are several different hiking trails within the park. |

Blow Me Down Provincial Park 60 kms, camping, 28 private campsites situated within two forested loops. In each loop there is waterpumps and toilets. The campsites are equipped with a picnic table, fireplace and space for vour vehicle. A wheelchair accessible comfort station with laundry, shower facilities and dumping station is located near the first loop. The park is situated on a peninsula between Lark and York Harbours. Magnificent views of the Blow Me Down mountains and the Bay of Islands make this park one of the most scenic locations in the area to visit.

The Viking Trail begins at the town of Deer Lake, NL; located along the Trans Canada Highway (route 1). As you head north on the Viking Trail towards St. Anthony, NL; you will pass through Gros Morne National Park, NL. Continuing north towards St. Anthony, NL; you pass by Port Saunders, NL. Here you can take a short 15 km detour towards Port au Choix National Historic Site. From Port Saunders, NL; continue on the Viking Trail to the junction with route 436, about 20 km before St. Anthony, NL. Follow route 436 for 30 km to L'Anse aux Meadows National Historic Site, NL.
At the tip of the Great Northern Peninsula of the island of Newfoundland, the remains of an 11th-century Viking settlement are evidence of the first European presence in North America. The excavated remains of wood-framed peat-turf buildings are similar to those found in Norse Greenland and Iceland.
