Town of Fort Nelson, B. C. Fort Nelson,B.C. named after Admiral Nelson, was established as a fur trading post in 1805. The North West Fur Company constructed a fort along the banks of the Nelson River. Fort Nelson is the northern gateway to some of BC’s most extraordinary provincial parks, Stone Mountain, Muncho Lake and Liard River Hot Springs. All three are in the Muskwa-Kechika Management Area – This vast tract of Northern Rocky Mountain wilderness is teeming with wildlife that it is often compared to Africa’s Serengeti. Fort Nelson also hosts the annual Canadian Open Dog Sled Races in February. Highway 97
